How It Works

How RoRo Car Shipping Works

RoRo stands for roll-on roll-off. Instead of being loaded into a container, your vehicle is driven up a ramp onto a specially built ship, secured on deck and driven off at the destination port.

RoRo vs Container

RoRo or Container Shipping: Which Is Right for You?

Both methods ship vehicles safely overseas. The right choice depends on your vehicle and what you want to send with it.

  • RoRo: usually lower cost for running vehicles, ideal for oversized vehicles and machinery, but the vehicle generally must be empty of personal belongings
  • Container: your car is fully enclosed and secured, you can often load personal items with it, and several cars can share one container

Popular Routes

RoRo Shipping From Halifax and Other Canadian Ports

RoRo vessels call at Canadian ports including Halifax, which is a common gateway for roll-on roll-off sailings to Europe. Popular RoRo routes from Canada include:

Sailing schedules and routes change with carrier availability, so we confirm the best option for your destination when we quote.

  • Halifax to the United Kingdom, Germany and Belgium
  • RoRo shipping from Canada to Nigeria, Ghana and West Africa
  • RoRo to the Middle East and the Mediterranean
  • Vehicles from western Canada, trucked or railed to the departure port

Before You Sail

Preparing Your Vehicle for RoRo Shipping

RoRo shipping is simple, but a little preparation avoids delays at the port. The vehicle must start and drive, have a working battery and brakes, and carry only a small amount of fuel.

Most RoRo carriers do not allow personal belongings inside the vehicle, so empty the cabin and trunk apart from the spare tire and tools. Note any existing damage at drop-off so the condition report is accurate.

Every vehicle exported from Canada must also be reported to the Canada Border Services Agency at least 72 hours before departure; the CBSA export guide has the details, and we file the report for you as part of your RoRo shipping booking.

I had a great experience with the shipping of my daughters car across Canada. From the pick up to drop off this company is A+. Ian and the crew answered all of my calls and emails in a timely manner and all my belongings were safe and sound upon arrival. I always read reviews as I wanted to feel comfortable handing my possessions over to a company that I’ve never done business with and just want everyone that is considering shipping a car to know my experience was awesome!!

What is RoRo shipping?

RoRo means roll-on roll-off. Vehicles are driven onto a specially designed ship, secured on enclosed decks and driven off at the destination port, with no container needed.

How much does RoRo shipping cost from Canada?

RoRo pricing is based on the size of the vehicle, the departure port and the destination. It is often cheaper than container shipping for a single running vehicle. Request a quote for an exact price.
